James Smith
Senior Associate
James' expertise lies in the development of public parks and urban waterfronts and in the administrative and documentation phases of landscape construction. Since joining MVVA, James has primarily been a project manager whose focus is on the coordination and implementation of the client and MVVA's goals for the planning, design, documentation, and construction of the CityArchRiver project at the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial and Riverfront in St. Louis, MO. Responsibilities include managing a large consultant team and working closely with the public/private client group. Much of the landscape construction has been successfully completed and is open to the public.

Prior to his employment at MVVA, James practiced landscape architecture for eight years with Hargreaves Associates. During this time, he worked at an associate level on the design and documentation of Crescent Park in New Orleans, LA and Cumberland Park in Nashville, TN.

James grew up in the Virginia Piedmont countryside, which contributed to his love of the fertile, evocative qualities landscape can instill. He received a dual Bachelor of Arts in Fine Arts and Theater Scenic Design from the College of William and Mary and went on to earn a Master of Landscape Architecture from Harvard's Graduate School of Design, where he was awarded the American Society of Landscape Architects Honor Award. James has been a visiting critic at Harvard's Graduate School of Design, the Career Discovery program at Harvard, and Boston Architectural College. He is a licensed landscape architect in the state of New York.

James joined MVVA in 2010.
