The Vandewater
The Vandewater is a 33-story residential tower located in the Morningside Heights neighborhood of Manhattan. It is the first luxury condominium of its kind on Manhattan’s West Side. Three carefully crafted landscapes – an arrival court, a dining patio, and private event garden – serve a range of needs and offer tranquil all-season retreat for the building’s residents and visitors alike. Collectively, these intimate garden spaces were inspired by the elegant coordination between landscape and architecture found in New York City landmarks such as Columbia University’s historic Beaux-Arts campus and Paley Park in Midtown.
Arrival Court Rendering
The core elements in the arrival court and the East and North gardens are distinctive plantings supported by a strong frame of existing and new site structures including stone seat walls made of New England mica schist.
East Garden Rendering
Custom geometric paving patterns from the exterior areas continue inside the building lobby. Although all the gardens are located on the ground level, the Vandewater landscape spaces are built over structure and their serene elegance is achieved through a tight integration between building structures and landscape design. For example, the east garden’s honey locusts are all positioned above columns that are supporting the roof of a subterranean swimming pool. In addition to providing spaces to explore and relax, the landscapes serve as viewing gardens, enjoyed from above.
