Austin grew up in Cedar Falls, Iowa, whose communities and landscapes inspired him to study how people and place affect one another. His design perspective has been shaped by his travels around the country, increasing his understanding of how landscapes are perceived through different cultural lenses.
Austin earned his Bachelor of Landscape Architecture, with a minor in General Business, from Iowa State University in 2016. As a student, he was awarded the 2016 Iowa ASLA Student President’s Medal, the 2016 ASLA Student Merit Award, and the 2015 ASLA Award of Excellence in Community Service for a design/build and research project on restorative environments within prisons. Prior to joining MVVA, Austin worked as a research assistant for the Institute of Design Research and Outreach in Ames, Iowa, contributing to I-WALK, an Iowa walkability program administered by the Iowa Department of Health and Iowa State University Extension and Outreach.
Austin interned in 2015 and returned to join MVVA in 2016.
