PHILLIPS EXETER ACADEMY
Exeter, NH (1989–1991)
In 1998, the Trustees of Phillips Exeter Academy in New Hampshire hired MVVA to develop a master plan to restore the existing campus landscape and to plan for future growth. MVVA’s plan suggested that the existing pattern of vehicular circulation and parking be substantially revised so that the lawns and quadrangles that are the school's great common spaces could be reclaimed and reinforced for pedestrian use. The plan creates a campus that is more inviting, accessible, and navigable for community members and visitors alike. Restoring the tree canopy is an ongoing project, and is particularly important in light of the fact that many of Exeter's surviving mature trees have begun their decline. Creating a botanically diverse but integrated tree canopy is crucial to the reestablishment of the lush foliage that once graced the campus.
